Wednesday July 2, 2008 Big Timber, Montana

Today we ventured into the town of Big Timber, Montana…and guess what? There are NO big timbers to be found! The feeling of the town is that of forestry and ranching. The community had put together a nice historical museum which was worthy of a visit. Tastee Freeze was the spot to grab some grub for lunch and while sitting in the truck, Bruce spotted the Gallatin Forest headquarters next door.

Last fall we gave a good friend of ours a unique gift for her 60th birthday. The US Dept. of Forestry has been partnering with an Arbor group that will coordinate the planting of trees in national forests, putting a plaque in the person’s name. Ironically the forest in which the 60 trees were to be planted in was the Gallatin National Forest. There had been a terrible forest fire a few years back and efforts were being made to replant.

Being curious as to the legitimacy of the program, I walked next door to speak with someone. A female at the desk knew exactly what I was talking about and suggested that I speak with the manager of the program upon his return. As I exited the building a man pulled up in his truck who answered to the name that I had been given. We spoke in the parking lot and he said that the tree planting had just been completed last Friday, as the crew was being dispatched to fight fires in California! What a coincidence!

After making a run to the local IGA store, we returned to camp to do laundry and try to connect to internet. Tomorrow we will drive through Bozeman and into Ennis.
