Tuesday July 1, 2008 Big Timber, Montana

July 1, 2008 Tuesday - Big Timber, Montana

Travel mornings are usually spent breaking up camp, stowing things away and making any calls before hitting the road. Cell coverage is intermittent while driving and at times very frustrating.

With thunderstorms expected this afternoon and all day tomorrow, we found a place to stay for two nights along the Boulder River in Big Timber, Montana. We followed the Yellowstone River out of Billings yesterday and witnessed crews scrambling to shore up the river bank. The rivers are all swollen and muddy with silt from snow run off. As I write, I can hear the rushing waters at the edge of the park. We were asked if we wanted river front or a treed site. Typically we love to be right at the waters edge, but not here! The speed and drop of the river is absolutely frightening…and I love water! One missed step and you’d be history!

Just after we set up camp, the thunder storm rolled in and it’s turned out to be a wet afternoon. The outside temperature dropped from 88 degrees upon our arrival to 57 right now! Tomorrow we’ll make a run into town for supplies, do laundry and check out the outlying area. We read that the movie, “The Horse Whisperer” was filmed here…so for those of you that saw the movie, that’s the kind of terrain that we’re in.
